Although Dow Automotive provides acoustical management solutions for any stage of a vehicle's development, we don't simply approach vehicle acoustics from a traditional sound absorption/sound damping perspective. We know that increased need for quieter occupant compartments drives the selection of acoustical products that isolate the occupant from exterior noise whether from the environment, from driving conditions such as tires and pavement, or from the engine. But we also look at how we can influence vehicle design to prevent noise from occurring pre-production. Acoustics and structure go hand in hand – and we know that improving a vehicle's structure will improve that vehicle's acoustical performance. And, along with our wide range of materials, we have the diagnostic testing and computer modeling capability to deliver total solution management globally.

Dow Automotive's Body Engineered Systems address structure-born noise as well as engine and road noise.

• Traditional baffles can be used as appropriate for their sound absorbing capability.
• Low-density foams can be injected into pillars and other vehicle cavities to act as reliable acoustical seals.
• Sprayable dampers can help block road noise while also acting as corrosion-resistant underbody coatings.
• Injection-molded dashmats, and under-the-hood engine covers and noise shields can effectively reduce engine noise intrusion into the passenger compartment.

Structure-born noise can be reduced by using structural adhesives on vehicle hem flanges and along weld lines to limit vibration caused by mechanical fasteners and spot-weld fatigue. New sealing technology for access holes further reduces structure-born noise.
