Working closely with BMW R&D engineers in Germany and in Spartanburg, Dow Automotive developed a new grade of BETAMATE™ structural adhesive for the new BMW X5 front rails, front of the dash, shock towers and underbody. BETAMATE adhesives are typically used to enable mass reduction, while also improving vehicle stiffness, durability and crash resistance.

BETAMATE is one of Dow Automotive’s most profiled bonding solutions for structural applications and is used by OEMs globally.

The new BETAMATE for BMW’s X5 is a highly toughened crash-resistant adhesive and eliminates the need for an expensive pre-gel oven, saving significant capital investment. The adhesive is formulated to stay secured to the body structure during body wash, phosphate and e-coat baths. It also offers low viscosity, advanced processing characteristics and excellent corrosion resistance.

To meet BMW’s requirements in terms of product properties and production volume Dow Automotive modified an existing adhesive production facility in Michigan to produce the new material. With the BMW customized BETAMATE Dow automotive proved once more both: its customer and solution focussed philosophy together with excellent engineering capabilities.
