Dow Automotive introduces with INSPIRE™ TPO At-Press, an advanced technology for cost effective compounding of TPOs in automotive. Currently, the compounding process for elastomers and additives was effective but costly, so Dow Automotive developed a new solution basing on functional talc masterbatch (up to 70% talc content), its INSPiRE™ polypropylene and proprietary elastomer resin that is mixed directly at a standard molding machine for individually formulated TPOs that meet different OEM specifications.

Originally developed for exterior applications like bumper fascias, TPO At-Press is available also for interior applications as a two- or three-component system.

The two-component system is designed for control of shrinkage and coefficient of thermal expansion by the talc level. For exterior applications it combines a low temperature (-40˚C) ductile TPO with a highly filled talc masterbatch (70% talc), based on proprietary elastomer technology. This combination allows for improved stiffness and dimensional control, while maintaining impact stability. The unique dispersion of our talc-filled masterbatch allows coverage of a wide range of properties (5 to 10% talc formulation) with a single combination of 2 product (TPO+MB). The three-component system includes a metallocene elastomer, which allows independent control of dimensional and mechanical properties by varying talc and elastomer level. Products using this new technology show advantages like high stiffness, improved ductility, low weight and good recycability.
